A church will create a giant ‘Loom’ letter this weekend in an attempt to raise awareness about persecuted Christians.

St John's Church in Leytonstone is taking the current Loom Band craze to the next level by organising the challenge as part of its Michaelmas Fair on Saturday.

The Arabic letter 'N' will be created from small coloured bands as an act of solidarity and support for those persecuted in Iraq and Syria under Islamic State (ISIS).

The vicar of St John's, Rev David Britton, said: "We are using a fun activity to spread a serious message and show our solidarity for Christians and other religious minorities suffering from persecution in Iraq.

“We invite anyone, of any faith or none, who agrees to join us and help make this giant Loom Band - we want it to go round the entire forecourt.”

The Arabic letter 'N' fast became a worldwide symbol of support for Christians persecuted in Iraq and Syria on social media after ISIS militants painted the letter 'N' on Christian homes in Mosul.

Christians adopted the symbol as their profile picture on social media sites and the campaign #WeAreN spread rapidly across the world.

The Michaelmas Fair will be held at the church between 11am and 4pm.

The Giant Loom Band will be unveiled at 3pm.
