A group of mums are set to open a new play park next month after raising £40,000.

North Weald Mums began fundraising for the playground last year after deciding to revive an old wooden assault course on North Weald Common.

The group managed to raise a total of £3,500 through a series of parties, carol singing and comedy nights.

Grants totalling £36,500 were also donated for the cause from North Weald Parish Council, Essex County Council, Epping Forest District Council, Stansted Airport and The Grange Farm Trust.

The park's content is being kept a secret from the public until the grand unveiling at the North Weald Common from 11am on October 12 during the group's second annual teddy bear picnic.

The playground, which will begin being installed as of next week, will be an ongoing project as the group continue to raise funds to improve it.

North Weald Mums are currently heading towards their next fundraising target of £5,000 to install a roundabout with disabled access.

Chairwoman of North Weald Mums, Sue Malpass, 42, said: "I am totally and absolutely amazed that the park is opening so quickly.

"Everyone has worked so hard alongside their day jobs to ensure the park is complete.

"The support from local businesses and the community has been incredible."
