A call to abandon plans to close a hospital A&E department will take place at Downing Street today.

Redbridge Conservative Cllr Paul Canal and Labour deputy leader of the council Cllr Wes Streeting will deliver the letter to 10 Downing Street at 12pm today.

Along with councillors from Havering and Barking and Dagenham, they are calling on the Department of Health and David Cameron to scrap plans to close King George Hospital A&E, in Goodmayes.

However in response this week, clinical commissioning groups in these boroughs refused to budge on plans to centralise A&E services at Queen’s Hospital in Romford.

A spokesman for the groups said the closure will go ahead when it is deemed safe to do so.
