A historian specialising in military history will discuss his book at a visit to a memorial hall for its annual lecture.
Peter Doyle will lead the lecture, entitled Trench Talk: The language of the First World War, will take place at Woodford Memorial Hall, in High Road, South Woodford.
It looks at how the experience of the First World War changed the English language, adding words that were both in slang and standard military use, and modifying the usage and connotations of existing words and phrases.
Mr Doyle is member of the British Commission of Military History, and secretary of the Parliamentary All Party War Graves and Battlefield Heritage Group.
He is a military historian specialising in the Great War, having written around 40 books on the subject, and will be appearing alongside Julian Walker, who co-wrote Trench Talk, published in 2011.
The annual lecture, starting at 7.45pm, costs £7.
