An MP has demanded answers from the council over new cycle lanes which motorists say have caused disruption in the past week.

The 'Mini Holland’ scheme, which started on Friday, is part of a multi-million pound cycling scheme aimed at improving road safety and boosting the economy throughout Walthamstow.

However, several roads have been closed, blocked and re-directed, preventing cars, motorbikes and some buses from carrying out routine journeys in the trial lasting until October 13.

In an open letter to Waltham Forest council, Stella Creasy, MP for Walthamstow said: “I request a formal update on what is being proposed, and how residents can be involved in shaping the final plans for the spending of this investment in Walthamstow.

“Whilst I appreciate this scheme is a matter for the council and not parliament, given how valuable local knowledge is to this project I would like this information so that I may share it with the many residents who have been in touch with my office to help them participate in this project.

Responding to an “avalanche” of emails and tweets about the project, the Labour MP, who lives near the affected area, claimed she personally did not receive any formal information about the scheme.

Waltham Forest is one of three London boroughs to receive a share of £100m from TfL and the MP congratulated the council on securing this “substantial” funding.

However, Ms Creasy demanded further information 'as soon as possible' on local feedback, proposals for resident involvement, traffic monitoring, future public meetings and who will make the final decision on the project.
