Some artists use paint and clay to create their artworks, but Nathan Sawaya uses bricks, LEGO bricks to be specific.

The former corporate lawyer, who is based in New York, is the man behind renowned exhibition, The Art of the Brick, which has just opened at the Old Truman Brewery.

More than 80 one-of-a-kind sculptures created from more than a million LEGO bricks are on display – including a 20ft-long T Rex skeleton and interpretations of some of the world’s most famous artworks.

“I use LEGO bricks as my medium because I enjoy seeing people’s reactions to artwork created from something with which they are familiar,“ explains Nathan. “Everyone can relate to it since it is a toy that many children have at home.

“I want to elevate this simple plaything to a place it has never been before.

“I also appreciate the cleanliness of the medium. The right angles. The distinct lines. As so often in life, it is a matter of perspective. Up close, the shape of the brick is distinctive. But from a distance, those right angles and distinct lines change to curves.“

The exhibition includes an Interactive Zone inviting younger and older visitors to explore their creativity using the iconic bricks.

The Art of the Brick is at The Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, E1 6QL, until Sunday, January 4, various times. Details: 020 7492 5374, artofthebrick.co.uk
