An attempt to evict people living in makeshift shelters in a woodland area will be made in the coming days, it has been confirmed.

Transport for London (TfL) secured a possession order at the High Court on Friday, allowing it to reclaim the land where up to 30 people had been living at the border with Chingford and Upper Edmonton.

The men, believed mainly to be from Romania, had been sleeping rough near the canal off Advent Way for about three months, but Shane Kilcrann, landlord of the Old Hall Tavern in Hall Lane, Chingford, estimates they have been there for as long as 12 months.

Three men who had been sleeping in the wooded area told the Guardian on Friday that everyone would leave after High Court notices were taped to several trees, advising them of Friday's hearing and demanding £480 court fees.

Following the hearing on Friday, a spokeswoman for TfL said: "We have secured an order for possession from the High Court allowing the removal of the people unlawfully occupying our land near the Cooks Ferry roundabout in Edmonton.

"We will work with the local police and immigration services to coordinate the safe removal of the occupiers and will agree measures to prevent their return to the site.

"Following the removal process, we will take action to tidy and clean up the area."

The announcement will be welcomed by members of the River Lea Anglers Club who had described the situation as "untenable" and "damaging to the wildlife".
