Tube staff are set to strike next week for 48 hours as part of the long-running dispute over pay and working conditions.

The RMT Union announced today announced members will walkout from 9pm next Tuesday (October 14) until 6.30pm on October 16.

The action coincides with separate strikes by local authority workers and civil servants across the UK.

Union members came to the decision following a meeting last week, during which they said some, "but not enough", progress was made with London Underground.

Mick Cash, RMT general secretary, said: "RMT negotiators have made every effort in the long-running talks to resolve a range of issues that impact on our members’ jobs, their pay and working conditions and the safety of the services that they provide to the travelling public.

"We will not stand back and allow Government- driven austerity cuts to hollow out the tube system and leave it as a dangerous shell.

"The strike action next week is designed to force the Mayor to instruct his senior officials to back away from this toxic cuts package and engage in serious and meaningful negotiations."

He described Mayor Boris Johnson's plans to close station ticket offices and cut jobs as being "bulldozed through" and would "render the tube a no-go zone for people with disabilities and women travelling alone."

Figures revealed last month by London Assembly's Labour group revealed tube station in London could lose nearly half, or 588 members, of their staff under the TfL proposals by as early as next year.

TfL has yet to comment on the latest strike announcement.
