A Budapest-based health food brand, backed by tennis legend Andre Agassi, will open its first UK store in Walthamstow.

The Hungarian low carb fast-food deli Update 1 will start trading in High Street on October 12.

Eight-time grand slam winner Andre Agassi has joined the venture to help tackle obesity, which is expected to affect half of the UK population by 2050.

The deli will include organic coffee, a bakery, gluten-free items and low carb fast food hot and cold products.

Following Walthamstow's opening, four others will open across the capital within six months, and within five years, the company aims to have over 50 franchises throughout the UK.

Agassi is also helping the brand to expand beyond the UK in countries such as Austria, Germany, Italy, Turkey and Serbia.

He said: "I have long believed that exercise, plus the right nutrition and diet, are essential to long-term mental and physical health.

"The obesity problem around the world is extremely worrying so I am delighted and excited to be working with Update 1 to help people make the small-changes that can make a big difference."

Update 1 was founded in Budapest in 2004 by entrepreneur Norbi Ferenc Schobert and now has over 100 stores in Europe.

Mr Schobert added: "Update 1 has been proven to help people lose weight without them needing to give up their favourite food items.

"With obesity a core issue to populations around the world, our aim back in 2004 was to make dieting easier, more enjoyable and less extreme in order to effect real change.

"With this first launch in the UK and our exciting plans in motion elsewhere in the world, we are excited to be another step closer to realising that dream."

The Walthamstow store will be opened by Mr Schobert, his wife Reka and the economic, investment & trade commissioner Csaba Gelenyi from the Hungarian embassy.
