Staff at a kebab shop recently fined £15,000 after mouse droppings were found in salad have issued a "sincere apology" to customers.

In November 2013, Waltham Forest council’s environmental health team visited Kebabish Original in Leyton High Road for a routine inspection.

They found mouse droppings on the salad and the kitchen was described as "unsafe".

On September 19, at Thames Magistrates' Court the business, was fined £15,000 for health and safety breaches.

Following a guilty plea, Kenlar Ltd – the company which owned the business at the time – was fined £6,000 (£1,000 per offence).

Director Mazhar Hussain and Shareholder Nadeem Ahmed were each fined £1,000 over the droppings and £500 each for five other offences.

The business, which operates under new company Abbotts Park Kebabish, today told the Guardian that bad hygiene is a thing of the past.

Temporary manager Perwaiz Akhter said: “We are very sorry that this happened. Things went wrong and the owner admitted it in court. It will never happen again.

“The pictures do make it look so much worse than it was.

“The owner was actually away at the time in Pakistan. He was gone for six weeks. The staff got relaxed on things.

“Now we have changed the whole system. We have had a lot of work done and we have replaced the entire flooring downstairs. That was the biggest problem. It was old a wooden.

“I would ask anyone who has questions to come and visit us and they can see the kitchen for themselves.”

Mr Perwaiz showed the Guardian up to date Rentokil inspection documents.

The shop has also passed its last two health and safety inspections.

On July 21, the restaurant was awarded three stars from the Food Standards Agency.

“We have Rentokil inspections every month now and we are on top of the problem,” Mr Perwaiz said.

“Mice are a problem in this area. Even the shops that don’t have food have to work hard to get them away.

“All food is kept in cold storage overnight.”
