Two teenagers have won a community award after going to the rescue of stranded mums and babies during last month’s flash floods.

The duo, from Buxton School in Leytonstone, were given the Jack Petchey Award after local residents posted messages on Facebook singing their praises.

Khalid Muhammed and Tiago Domingos sprang into action when Homerton High Street was flooded last month, following torrential downpours.

The pair, both 15 and from Hackney, gave up two hours of their time to help stuck mums and babies and young children get home by getting ladders and helping them over fences.

Their heroics only came to light when a member of school staff spotted the social media posts.

Carol Moloney, Buxton's Community and Extended Schools Leader, said: “This act of kindness demonstrates our students are, in their final year of school, ready to be model citizens.”

Along with the award the boys were given £300 to spend on a school department. They choose PE.

Khalid said: "There is a stereotype about young people that they are not community minded so I'm glad that we helped to change that a little bit.

Tiago said:  It makes you feel good that you were able to help people.

"I hope we can be an example to other children at the school."
