Campaigners have given a cautious welcome to an announcement of planned improvements for disabled access to stations.

Transport for London (TfL) announced £75m plans to install lifts and step-free access at stations across London, including Newbury Park.

TfL had abandoned planned work at Newbury Park station in 2009 and bricked up the lift shafts due to funding problems.

But frustrated campaigners called for work to restart, saying the disabled, frail and elderly are effectively being denied use of the station.

Mark Kennedy, of Seven Kings & Newbury Park Residents Association, welcomed the announcement, but expressed concern over whether lifts will be provided at Newbury Park.

He said: “We welcome the news that TfL are planning a £75million fund for step free access.

“However, we do have concerns that any lifts will be installed at any of the stations mentioned by TfL, let alone Newbury Park.

“The reason for the concern is that the money targeted for lifts is for match-funding from third parties such as councils and property developers.

“It is also likely to take several years to build up a large enough pot of money.”
