A man has admitted biting a police officer while drunk in a hospital car park.

Timothy Perry, unemployed, of Haldan Road in Highams Park, pleaded guilty today at Thames Magistrates Court to assault by beating following the incident at Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone on September 26.

The 37-year-old was taken to hospital by his father, who was worried about his drinking habit, to get treatment for mental health problems.

Police were called after Perry began making threats to hospital staff and members of the public.

The court heard how Perry was found "slumped on the floor next to a car in the hospital car park".

When police put him into a wheelchair, he swore at them.

Perry then fell out of the wheelchair and as officers tried to take hold of his arms, he "attempted to head butt and sink his teeth into officers".

As he was placed on the floor to be restrained, the father-of-two bit PC Farrier's upper left thigh, resulting in "quite a significant injury" to his leg.

During his interview following arrest, Perry admitted assaulting the officer and apologised for his behaviour, saying he was "overwhelmed" on the day and became "frustrated" when officers tried to assist him.

Perry became unemployed in 2013 after being sectioned under The Mental Health Act.

Perry has been released on unconditional bail to be sentenced at Thames Magistrates Court on November 3.
