A nursery which faced possible closure earlier this year could join up with another early years education provider in Walthamstow.

Emergency meetings were held in January over the future of Low Hall Lane Nursery, in Low Hall Lane.

Due to a drop in enrolments at the nursery, a restructure and job cuts were considered as government funding was needed to keep it running.

Despite the nursery being rated outstanding three times since 2006 it could not attract enough new pupils.

Headteacher Claire Toberman resigned from the school in 2013.

The school survived the turbulence but is now looking to join up with nearby Church Hill Nursery.

Since Mrs Toberman left both nurseries have been run by Executive Headteacher Sandra Campbell.

Church Hill Nursery School cares for around 70 children and is currently developing early educational provision for two-year-olds on a separate site.

The Children’s Centres have been judged to be good in the most recent Ofsted inspections and the local authority’s annual reviews.

School governors from both boards will decide on the future of the schools.

If they join together in a ‘hard federation’ budgets and resources will be shared but they will be separately inspected by Ofsted and run by one board only.

The consultation document from the council implies the move will be beneficial.

It states: “Both schools are well placed to meet the needs, interests and aspirations of the diverse multi-lingual communities in Walthamstow, and have a long history of promoting early bilingualism in high-quality educational provision.

“Members of both school Governing Bodies have met and worked together to develop an overview of high-quality early years education in the Walthamstow context.

“There are strong signs that this interim arrangement is having a good impact.”

The consultation process started yesterday and will end on Sunday November 30.

If it is successful the nurseries will join together from February 2015.
