A couple who have dedicated their careers to fine food and five star catering are set to open an artisan bakery.

This weekend two married chefs will open The Wild Goose Bakery in Leytonstone High Road.

The shop is described as a ‘labour of love’ and a ‘dream come true’ for Vernon and Kirstin Steyn who have both proven they can handle the heat in the kitchen.

Vernon was born in South Africa, but has been a ‘Leytonstonian’ for seven years.

His experiences in the catering business range from working in five-star accommodation to cooking in a field kitchen where the passersby included lions and elephants.

He was part of the team who won the prestigious ‘Best Afternoon Tea in England’ award at Browns Hotel, and worked for several years for acclaimed chef Mark Hix.

Mr Steyn said his father, a Pastor, instilled in him, a ‘great sense of social responsibility’, and his Grandmother was the source of inspiration for his passion for baking.

Scottish born Kirstin moved to Leytonstone six-years-ago and is expecting her first child.

She also boasts impressive kitchen experience after graduating from London’s leading cookery school, Leiths, and working in five-star restaurants.

From Saturday the bakery will be open for ‘daytime treats’ including coffee and cake.

The name ‘Wild Goose’ was chosen to reflect the couple’s belief in helping people.

Mrs Steyn said: “If a goose is injured during their annual migration, either the entire flock or a few will stay with them until they are recovered or have taken their final breath. This principle of loyalty and teamwork resonates strongly with us both.

“The bakery will offer a fine selection of fresh food, teas & coffee in a modern welcoming space, self styled and built, centrally located on the high road.”
