Smoking could be banned in Waltham Forest parks after the deputy leader of the council vowed to look at the measure.

The London Health Commission’s called for London’s parks to be smoke-free to improve public health.

Boris Johnson did not back the proposal himself, but called on local councils to introduce the ban if they see fit.

Deputy leader of Redbridge council, Cllr Wes Streeting, also said he would look into introducing the ban in Redbridge parks

It would need to be introduced as a bye-law by local authorities.

Councillor Clyde Loakes, cabinet member for environment, said the council would look into the possibility of introducing the ban.

He said: “Waltham Forest has a history of innovation around issues of this nature.

“It is certainly an option we will be exploring given how well it chimes with our hard stance on environmental issues and given our responsibilities around public health.

“Obviously we need to look at the report to see how stopping smoking in parks might work.

“As we have seen elsewhere around spitting, ensuring enforcement is practical and proportionate is the key to achieving the scores of successes we have enjoyed.
