Planned changes to flight paths will have a "profound impact" on Wanstead residents, it is claimed.

Under current proposals, most planes travelling to and from London City Airport would be installed with new navigation technology, enabling flights to use a narrower flight corridor over Leyton, Leytonstone, Wanstead and Barkingside.

A public consultation on the plans ends on November 27 and Cllr Sheila Bain, of Wanstead ward, said she would be putting forward a motion calling on Redbridge council to formally oppose the move.

She said: “These changes will see flights concentrated in a narrower corridor over Wanstead while currently these are dispersed throughout Redbridge.

“These proposals will have a profound impact on Wanstead residents who will be under the flight path and who have not been consulted nor given an opportunity to respond.

“We are asking the council to strongly oppose these latest proposals, which will have a severe noise and environmental impact, and to demand that a proper public consultation is carried out with the residents of the borough.”

London City Airport defended the plans, saying it had followed Civil Aviation Authority guidance on consultation, and that the changes would make no difference to residents.
