An Oxford graduate says she hopes to inspire pupils after taking a job at a school in one of Waltham Forest’s most deprived areas.
Lajoy Tucker, 23, from Tottenham, graduated from St John’s College with a first-class degree in Chemistry in June.
The 23-year-old has decided to take a teaching post at George Mitchell School in Farmer Road, Leyton, to try and help pupils to realise their potential.
She will undergo training under the Teach First programme, which aims to encourage graduates to teach in inner city schools.
She said: “When I went to Oxford I did not see as many people as I would like that come from similar background to me.
“There are students here, and where I grew up, that are capable. I did it so I know they exist. It is about nurturing people.
“Oxford is still very white. Part of it is the presence, seeing someone who looks like them that’s educated and has gone to a very good university.”
