One of the UK's biggest supermarkets has teamed up with a popular food bank whose demand has quadrupled in 12 months.

Sainsbury's in High Street, Walthamstow, has entered into a year-long partnership with Eat or Heat, to potentially widen the charity's reach and provide a base for donations.

To mark the joint venture, they are holding a Halloween themed 'super Sunday' fundraising event from 12pm to 4pm at the supermarket.

There will be free face painting for children and an opportunity for customers to find out about the voluntary organisation which has recently celebrated its first birthday.

Last week it was revealed by the Guardian that the number of referrals to Eat or Heat, based in Jewel Road, Walthamstow, has quadrupled from feeding 20 people a month in October 2013 to almost 100.

The Walthamstow supermarket is now also officially marked as a donation station for people to drop off a perishable or unwanted food items such as tins of vegetables, meat, fish, rice and toiletries.

Food bank co-founder Gary Nash said: "Eat or Heat provides a vital service.

"Many of us are just one pay cheque away from being in financial difficulty."
