Thames Water is warning customers to be vigilant following a series of burglaries by bogus workmen claiming to be from the company.

A burglar posing as a ‘water board’ official stole cash and jewellery from a pensioner in Waltham Abbey during a spate of attempted burglaries at the weekend.

The thief, who said he needed to check taps while working on water mains in the area, targeted five homes in Buckhurst Hill, one in Epping and one in Waltham Abbey on Saturday.

A spokesman from Thames Water said it was extremely rare for employees to perform surprise visits.

Jon Lorimer, Thames Water’s security risk specialist, said: “The message is simple: if in doubt, keep them out. We send our engineers out with clear identification badges and if you still are not sure, phone us to confirm before letting them in.

“Our customers’ safety is our priority so please be vigilant when answering the door to anyone claiming to be from the ‘water board’, be alert and be aware.”

Police are still hunting the suspect who has been described as being white, about 6ft tall and of stocky build. He was wearing a grey tracksuit.

Anyone with information about the man should contact DC Baker or colleagues at Loughton CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
