As the main building at Waltham Forest Pool & Track closed ahead of demolition on Friday, it emerged negotiations are still ongoing over which facilities will be replaced.

A £23million proposal for the rebuilt centre, including a new swimming pool, spa and BMX track, were rejected in September over a controversial move not to include a 5m diving board.

A campaign involving parents and members of a diving club fought the proposal, claiming it was a vital training facility.

Planning committee members agreed and rejected the proposal on the grounds of a loss of amenity.

Greenwich Leisure Limited, which runs the centre on behalf of the council, has six months to appeal the decision.

But it has emerged the contractor is still in negotiations over the design.

Cabinet member for health and wellbeing, Ahsan Khan, admitted the proposal could be changed.

He said: “GLL, our leisure provider, are currently in discussions with the council regarding what changes may need to be made to any future planning application.”
