Inspectors who checked two roads after TV star Bradley Walsh criticised their condition on national television have said no repair work is required.

Epping actor, comedian and game show host condemned the state of Gravel Lane in Chigwell and Epping Lane in Stapleford Tawney when he appeared as a guest on BBC One's One Show on Thursday.

Mr Walsh said the council should be "ashamed of themselves" after claiming potholes had caused extensive damage to his car.

He said in 11 months, he had needed five new tyres and, along with damage to wheels, the problem had cost him more than £1,500 in repairs.

Yesterday, Essex County Council engineers visited the two roads and reported that "no work was required".

An Essex County Council spokesperson said: “Highways engineers inspected Epping Lane and Gravel Lane on Monday and it was found that no work was required.

"We regularly carry out inspections but we also rely on members of the public to report defects to help ensure any issues are brought to our attention and assessed as quickly as possible."

Essex County Council said it is currently investing in plans to reduce defects to roads and spending over £17.5m to fix current problems, such as potholes, on the county’s main roads, including 60 in Epping.
