Coffee lovers are today launching phase two of their campaign to support a small drinks kiosk in Walthamstow – just months after it was ‘saved’ by MP Stella Creasy.

Devoted fans of Madre Tierra – a popular stop for commuters outside Walthamstow Station – rushed to support owner Alessandro Pinna in March when he was told by the council that a station expansion would mean he has to leave.

Hundreds of people signed a petition to keep the four-year-old business going and Stella Creasy intervened.

However, Catherine Marcus who started the petition has today announced the fight is back on.

She said: “We thought we won back in March when Waltham Forest's Clem Smith and Stella Creasy MP, assured us that Madre Tierra would not be forced to shut down to make way for a Costa Coffee or whatever ghastly corporate identikit business they had in mind.

“Now, it seems though that the problem has just been kicked down the road. Alessandro has been given notice and will have to leave his trading space on 1 April 2015.”

Mr Pinna has been told he must apply to serve coffee on the other side of the road, at a cost of £420, but the space is not guaranteed, especially if there is competition from large companies.

Mrs Marcus has begun a crowd-funding campaign to raise the money for the application, asking customers to donate as little as 20p when they visit the stall.

She added: “We want to show the Council that we all have a stake, however small, in Madre Tierra's continued success.”

Miss Creasy, MP for Walthamstow wrote on Facebook in April that the kiosk 'is not going anywhere' whilst council leader Chris Robbins promised to help find an 'amicable agreement' between land owners Network Rail and development company Solium.
