A Brownie leader selected to lead a project on improving women's lives in Peru has returned to the UK.

Caroline Brown of 6th Chingford Brownies travelled with five other Girl guiding members to the South American country in early August.

During the month-long Guiding Overseas Linked with Development Scheme (GOLD) trip, the women visited Lima and Tacna in the south and Sullana in the north to train Peruvian women in leadership skills, social media and training skills to the project can continue long after their return to the UK.

The 23 year-old from Enfield and former employee at the Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge in Ranger's Road, Chingford, said: "Many participants were inspired to take away some of the more practical ideas from our trainings and implement them straight away in their own guide units and training programmes.

"Guiding is especially important as a female-only space in Peru.

"The Girl Scout Association in Peru is particularly good at advocating on women's issues and they took part in an international 'Stop the Violence' campaign.

"The organisation also helps girls develop many of the skills to be competitive in a work environment that is biased towards the male sex."

Since its inception 20 years ago, the GOLD participants have travelled as far as Guyana, Madagascar, Russia, Gambia and Thailand.
