Chingford Chess Club, originally known as the North Chingford Chess Club , was founded in 1957 by a number of enthusiasts.
Over the years it established itself at various locations including Sewardstone , Priory Court estate, Friday Hill House and even a member’s garage. For the last three years, the club which has around 25 current players, has met at The British Legion Club in Hall Lane, Chingford, on Monday evenings from 7.30pm.
Club Secretary and Treasurer Brian Spear is one of the eldest members, aged 68, and says the age range varies from 16 upwards. Mr Spear said: “We’re keen to recruit club level players to play in the North Circular Chess League.”
Throughout the main playing season from September through to May, matches with other clubs are played every ten days or so and membership of the club will cost around £60 for the first year including fees for the British Chess Federation, British Legion etc.
The club’s longest serving member Tony Wilding, an electrical engineer, passed away in 2013 after over 50 years with Chingford Chess Club.
