Proposals for the development of so-called affordable housing received the backing of councillors last night.

Epping Forest District Council discussed plans for 15 rented housing units on the site of garages in Vere Road, Loughton.

Housing Portfolio Holder David Stallan presented the proposals to lease the land to Moat Housing Association at the meeting.

Subject to planning permission, one and two bedroom flats and associated parking would be developed on the site.

If approved, the council will receive £425,000 in exchange for the lease of the land, which will  be used to fund the council’s own house building programme and other regeneration schemes.

The plans would also aim to provide 14 additional car parking spaces for lease to residents of a new development being built next to the site, on land formerly occupied by the Sir Winston Churchill public house.

The development of the former pub site has been heavily criticised by residents for not offering any affordable accomodation, and for being out of character with the surrounding area.

Councillor Stallan assured councillors that a full consultation on the newly proposed development would be carried out with local residents through the planning application process.
