An African choir which has performed in front of the world's most powerful heads of state will begin its UK tour in Woodford Green.

Choir 41 of the African Children's Choir is made up of 18 disadvantaged children from war-torn Uganda aged between 9 and 11 years old.

Each member has been sponsored by charity Music for Life because they are either an orphan, has lost a parent or their parents are too poor to pay for an education.

For the last eleven months, choir 41 made up of 10 girls and eight boys, have been touring the USA and Canada, but they are to perform the first concert of their three-month UK tour in Woodford Green.

The tour is being led by Nathanael Longstaff, 22, of The Green in Woodford Green, in what will be his first major volunteering activity. He will be assisted by eight chaperones from Africa, America and the UK.

As part of the concert, which is to be held at All Saints Church in Inmans Row on November 24, each child will stay with local families for up to three nights, coordinated by the church.

The concert starts at 7pm and tickets cost £5 for adults and £3 for children.

Music for Life has educated over 52,000 children in seven countries in the continent and since the inception of African Children's Choir in 1984, choir singers have performed for Her Majesty the Queen, Barack Obama and Nelson Mandela among many other celebrities and dignitaries.

They last performed in the area at Walthamstow Assembly Hall in the mid 1990s.
