Police are holding a two-week gun amnesty in an attempt to prevent firearms falling into the hands of criminals.

Essex Police has taken the step as recent changes to legislation mean it is now illegal for people with convictions to hold antique weapons.

Epping residents will be able to hand in illegal, antique and imitation firearms, stun guns, CS gas and pepper spray to Loughton Police Station in High Road.

The amnesty starts this Friday and last until November 2 and does not cover other weapons such as knives, machetes and swords.

Essex Police says it deals with 330 firearm offences a year and evidence suggests gangs have developed ammunition that can be used in antique guns.

Assistant chief constable Matthew Horne said: "We are looking for public support to get as many guns off the streets and out of potential criminal circulation as we can. Every gun given up is one less that criminals can use."

Anyone planning to bring in an unloaded weapon is advised by police to place it in a bag or holdall so they do not alarm other members of the public.
