A proposed new £2million church hall, which has been planned over ten years, will become an important focal point for the whole community, according to the chairman of the committee behind the plans.
A planning application has been submitted to build the centre on the current site of the curate’s house, next to St John’s Church in Epping.
The ambitious plan features a two-storey central hall, an exhibition space and function rooms providing more space for local groups, such as the Brownies and art societies.
The hall will include a cafe, storage space and church offices, with easy access for people with disabilities.
Mark Sowerby, chair of the church’s development committee, said the vision was to create a thriving hub which would become an important part of the fabric of Epping life.
“We want this new facility to be firstly an Epping community hall, with the church at the centre of that community,” he added.
Nr Sowerby emphasised that the centre will be open to all, including people of other religions.
The cost of the build will be met through community fundraising and a decision on the application is due shortly.
