The date has been announced for the switching-on of Christmas tree lights funded by the community in Wanstead.

Redbridge council scrapped funding for a Christmas tree on George Green in Wanstead, prompting criticism from residents and councillors.

A crowdfunding page was set up by Conservative councillors to fund the tree and lights, which hit its £3,000 target in less than a week.

A switch-on ceremony on November 29 will feature carols by three school choirs.

The schools taking part will be Wanstead Church School, in High Street, Our Lady of Lourdes School, in Chestnut Drive, and Churchfields Junior School from South Woodford.

The ceremony will take place on George Green, opposite the Wanstead tube station, from 4.30pm.
