A new gate will be installed in a town centre to prevent a parking 'free-for-all' in a square.
As many as 30 cars a day regularly parked in Market Square, Waltham Abbey, after the previous gate was damaged by drivers.
The lack of parking restrictions left the authories powerless to act, causing disruption to the twice-weekly market.
The gate was funded by Essex County Council and will be installed today.
County Councillor Ricki Gadsby said: “Everyone thought it was a car park, it was an absolute free-for-all.
“Once one person parked there, others followed.
“Lots of residents complained to me about the dangers it could cause children and the elderly who just want to go shopping.
“I am delighted to reclaim this space for residents of Waltham Abbey, we finally have our square back.”
