Fourteen former pupils who were killed in the First World War are being commemorated in unique “panels of remembrance”.

Chigwell School’s Memorial Chapel is currently hosting the panels, which feature photographs and memories of the soldiers.

The chapel was originally built to honour the 79 former pupils and teachers who were killed in the war.

The panels were organised by school archivist Marian Delfgou, who researched the soldiers by using letters home to families and the contemporary notes of headteacher Oswald Darch.

Mrs Delfgou said: "This year memories and enquiries are still flooding in.

“I am very grateful for all the interest and help I have had from the many families of several of ‘our chaps’”.

One of the panels features a German member of staff, Dr Hermann Sommermeier, who taught at Chigwell but travelled home to fight for Germany.

He was killed in the war but is commemorated at the school.
