A series of commemorative events have taken place this weekend to mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

Ceremonies have taken place at war memorials across Redbridge to commemorate the contribution of servicemen and women in the First and Second World War and later conflicts.

The first memorial service took on Saturday at Woodford War Memorial in St Mary's Church, High Road, South Woodford.

It was attended by dozens of residents, councillors, civic dignitaries’ and MP Iain Duncan Smith.

Residents were joined by Mayor councillor Ashley Kissin, and deputy mayor councillor Linda Huggett, for a two minute silence at 11am today and wreath-laying service at Ilford War Memorial in Eastern Avenue.

There was also a ceremonial service at Wanstead War Memorial in High Street, Wanstead, at 12.30pm.

There are two major events taking place on Armistice Day - November 11.

To mark the special occasion, Fairlop Heritage Group have organised a Remembrance service at Fairlop Waters County Park starting at 11am.

An hour later, a plaque in memory of civilians killed in WWI and WWII will be unveiled at Barkingside Cemetery in Longwood Gardens.

Chairman of British Legion Barkingside branch, John Coombes, attended Ilford War Memorial service on Sunday.

He said: "It was brilliant, so many young people were there and it was quite amazing, definitely more people turned up than normal this centenary year of the First World War.

"The scouts were there and people from all faiths and backgrounds, I think this peak in attendance should continue for the next four years.

"It was very emotional and I am delighted with how well the service went."
