A human chain of around 100 people took over a high street on Saturday to raise awareness of human trafficking.

Greenwich-based Christian Revival Church London (CRC) held the anti-human trafficking event, Chain for Change, on Saturday between 8.30am and 2pm in High Street, Wanstead.

As part of the campaign, members met with police at Woodford Police Station, in High Road, Woodford Green, to speak about the issue.

Yesterday morning, a meeting was also set up in Westminster with Wanstead MP John Cryer.

The event was raising money for charity Eaves Housing for Women, which supports women recovering from human trafficking, and provides them with basic clothing and toiletries.

Member of CRC, Victoria Wasteney, said the money fundraised will pay for over 100 people to receive this support.

She said: “The event was really successful with around 100 volunteers marching along the high street.

“The Wanstead public was really interested and many had not heard of the issue so it just goes to show that awareness needs to be raised.

“Our church is dedicated to getting out there in east London, engaging with the community and being active on issues like this.

“MP John Cryer even took time out of his day to speak with us about the issues and he was very impressed with the campaign and the group for making a stand.

“Police too were really responsive and we showed them the work Eaves does, we agreed to work with them to help direct people to the right services.”
