Pensioners are getting set to say goodbye to a much-loved club which has been providing entertainment and fighting against adult isolation for more than four decades.

Despite the odds the weekly club, known by members as ‘The Tuesday Club’ will cease to exist as of December.

For years the volunteers have fought closure and kept on going turbulence, being forced to move from locations including from Lloyd Park and Chestnuts House before settling at the Waltham Forest Corporation Sports & Social Club.

However, dwindling membership and a lack of donations is now forcing the club to close.

The number of elderly residents attending has fallen from 50 to around 12 in the last decade.

Clive Cocks, 70, has been in charge for five years.

He said: “We are the only club available which hires in entertainers. We have all sorts. Years ago we had a lot of members and it was great. People were generous and we looked after each other, we just don’t have that now.

“Without the entertainment it is not the same, and we cannot afford it.”

In the past the club has taken elderly people on holiday to the Isle of Wight and Yarmouth, as well as days out.

Frances Cocks, 78, who lives with her husband in Walthamstow said it will be an emotional goodbye.

“We would really like to thank the social club and the activities co-ordinator at Aston Grange who brings residents here every week. Without this club some people would just sit in a chair all day.

“It’s so sad but we have made good friends who we will keep in touch with.”

Joan Fryer, 88, joined the club the year she left work – 28 years ago.

In later years she ran the club before she gave it up five years ago.

She said: “I’ve got so many lovely memories; we’ve had great times with people.

“As far as I know it has been going between 45 and 50 years, I ran it for about ten years. I look forward to it so much.

“For a lot of the people who come it is the only time they leave the house. I will be very sad when we say goodbye.”

The last session will be on December 9.
