Primary school pupils participated in commemorating 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War this week.

Pupils at Avon House School in High Road, Woodford Green, stood in silence in the shape of a poppy to share in the nation’s two-minute silence for fallen heroes at 11am on Tuesday.

One youngster played the Last Post on the saxophone to an assembly of staff, students and parents as they stood to remember.

Singing and readings were performed by pupils at the school, including the reading of the names of former Monkhams Estate residents who had died.

The school created a small memorial garden on the grounds which each class attended throughout the day to lay a wreath before a wartime lunch of stew and dumplings.

Headteacher Amanda Campbell said: “The day ended with a silent football match as a demonstration of peace that was expressed nearly 100 years previously.

“It was a moving day and I hope the pupils will take much from this time as we remember those who gave their lives fighting for their country.”
