Immediate action should be taken to improve safety in a road where a woman was killed, according to councillors.

The 46-year-old pedestrian was in collision with a white Ford Transit van in Sewardstone Road, on the Waltham Abbey border with Chingford, on Thursday evening.

The woman, whose name is yet to be released, died at the scene and the driver, a 35-year-old man from Waltham Cross, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

People living near the scene of the crash have called for safety measures, including speed bumps, parking restrictions and better lighting.

Epping Forest District councillor for Waltham Abbey, Ricki Gadsby, agreed something should be done.

She said: “I heard the terribly sad news of the fatality this morning.

"Whether their concerns are a bad sign or the need of a speed bump these are my constituents and I will raise the issue with Highways straight away.”

Cllr Rod Butler, of Honey Lane Ward, described the road as "lethal".

"The bends and hills on Sewardstone Road are lethal," he said.

Cllr Eddie Johnson, cabinet member for highways maintenance and small schemes, said: "We are keen to work together with the police and other agencies as part of our efforts to reduce the number of collisions and injuries on our streets, which is why we wholeheartedly support initiatives like this week’s BRAKE road safety event as one of a range of activities aimed at raising the issue with all road users.”
