A cyclist has been seriously injured after being hit by a car in Walthamstow.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was involved in a collision with a blue Nissan Micra shortly before 11am today.

Police blocked access to Whipps Cross Road from Wood Street and Lea Bridge Road as they dealt with the incident.

The cyclist was on the road, under the front of the car after the incident.

Traffic came to a standstill in the area.

A 44-year-old chauffer, who was one of the first to arrive on the scene, said it looked like the cyclist had been seriously injured.

He said: “It literally happened just before I got there.

“The bike was on the road in front of the car. It looked like a girl’s push bike because it had a drop frame.

“The person looked like they were stuck under the car. Someone had covered them with a blanket. In all honestly it looked like someone had been killed.

“The ambulances were just arriving when I was there.”

A spokeswoman for London Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 10.54am to reports of a road traffic collision between a cyclist and a car on Whipps Cross Road.

“We treated a man for injuries to his pelvis. He was taken by air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital.”

Police described the man’s injuries and confirmed that no arrests have yet been made.

Road blocks are now being removed.
