The former home of one of the borough’s most well-known businesses has been brought back to life for the business community.

Lee Valley Estates (LVE) took over Sutherland House in Walthamstow, officially opening it on Thursday.

The building has undergone ‘extensive refurbishment’ and will now be rented to multiple companies after being divided into rentable office space.

Councillor Clare Coghill officially opened the new business centre in Sutherland Road last week.

Sutherland House was purpose built in 1951 for Britains Toys who already occupied the North Light Building on nearby Stirling Road.

Britains Toys were responsible for the manufacture of lead model soldiers, farm and country village sets and their success led to the building of Sutherland House.

During both World Wars the company used their facilities to aid the wars; specifically producing shrapnel balls during WWI. Sutherland House was more involved with the post-WWII plastic production of its soldiers and provided employment in Walthamstow for over 750 people in its premises and a further 3,000 home workers.

Jon Polledri, Lee Valley Estates Managing Director, said: “In Walthamstow we have a need for affordable offices, workshops and studios; Sutherland House will once again provide the local community with employment opportunities and training facilities.”

Lee Valley Estates was established in 1987 with the aim of supporting economic development throughout the Lee Valley Corridor.
