The man responsible for roads in Essex has said he has not been made aware of any safety issues at the location where a woman was knocked down and killed last week.

A 36-year-old woman was killed after being hit by a transit van as she crossed Sewardstone Road in Waltham Abbey last Thursday.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and bailed until March 2.

A motorcyclist was seriously injured 20 minutes earlier on the same stretch of road after being involved in a collision.

People living nearby were joined by councillors in calling for safety measures on the road, claiming there are regular accidents and problems with speeding, lighting and parking,

But Cllr Eddie Johnson, cabinet member for highways, said: “We have not been made aware of any highway issues at the current time.

“The collision is still currently under investigation by the Essex Police serious collision investigation unit, until this investigation is concluded we cannot comment on what, if any, works will be undertaken."

"We are keen to work together with the police and other agencies as part of our efforts to reduce the number of collisions and injuries on our streets.”
