Public toilets nominated for the 2014 Loo of the Year award have been closed all week.

The facilities, in Baker’s Lane, Epping, behind Marks and Spencer, were closed on Monday by Epping Town supervisor Bill Towers, who said that the toilets were in a poor condition and there was no water supply.

Epping Town Council said it had been in contact with supplier Affinity Water, but the company’s system was criticised for being inefficient and slow, despite the public need for services.

The toilets have been dogged by poor water supply for some time, Mr Towers said.

He said: “The water supply has been bad ever since we opened the toilets but it has decreased greatly.

“We do not know what the issue is.”

Mr Towers said that potential problems include an aging sewage system and a lack of consistent contractors.

Affinity Water has been contacted for comment.
