Families gathered as Christmas lights were switched on in Leytonstone last night.
The free event took place yesterday at St John's Church in Church Lane, Leytonstone, and featured a number of activities, including a Santa's grotto, Rodeo Christmas pudding and bouncy castle.
Reverend David Britton said the event, organised by E11BID, was enjoyed by all.
He said: “It was very successful, the Santa’s grotto was very popular with children and there were lots of positive feedback from parents.
“There were mince pies and refreshments with children’s craft too, it was great to see so many people there and children from local primary schools.”
The blue lights, in the trees and on lamp posts surrounding the church, were switched on at 4.30pm, with the crowd joining in the countdown.
Rev Britton said: “There was a brass band and carol singing, it was just a pleasant event.
“There was no D-list celebrity turning on the lights or any big red fake button.
"We went for a much more community-minded way of doing it, everyone counted down together."
