The switching-on of the Christmas tree lights, funded by the community in Wanstead, will take place tomorrow.

Redbridge council scrapped funding for a Christmas tree on George Green in Wanstead, prompting criticism from residents and councillors.

A crowdfunding page was set up by Conservative councillors to fund the tree, which hit its £3,000 target in less than a week.

The event will feature the Riverside Brass Quintet and carols by three school choirs.

The schools taking part will be Wanstead Church School, in High Street, Our Lady of Lourdes School, in Chestnut Drive, and Churchfields Junior School from South Woodford.

At 4.30pm, estate agents in the high street, Keatons and PettySon & Prestwich will be switch on the lights as both contributed £750 towards the total.

Phoebe Lyons had her name drawn from the contributors to the fund, and she will join representatives from the two estate agents to switch on the lights.

The ceremony will take place on George Green, opposite the Wanstead tube station.
