Iain Duncan Smith has said he has “severe concerns” over a proposal that could lead to high-density housing developments in Wanstead and Woodford.

The proposal, one of four being considered by Redbridge council for the Local Development Framework 2015-30, would allow large scale developments in traditionally suburban “major corridors” in Woodford Green, South Woodford and Wanstead.

Other options include building on existing, unspecified “parcels” of green belt land, and developing Oakfield playing fields in Fencepiece Road, Ilford.

In an email sent to planning officers at Redbridge council, the MP for Chingford and Woodford said he was sure the infrastructure could cope with a sharp rise in population.

He said: “I write to register my severe concern in regards to this proposal.

“My constituents have made it clear to me their utter despair at these plans and the detrimental impact such development would have on their daily lives.

“The plans highlight a complete lack of social and physical infrastructure to support this vast increase in the local population.

“Additionally, many of the affected areas within my constituency have great heritage and provide much-needed family housing which could be put at risk.

“Whilst I am aware of Redbridge’s need to create many more homes in the coming years, I am greatly concerned that it will create very cramped flats in crowded areas and will fail to address the need for affordable family homes in the borough.”

A public meeting attended by more than 200 people, organised by Conservative councillors as part of the "Save our Suburbs” campaign, took place on Monday night in South Woodford.

Labour leader of Redbridge council, Cllr Jas Athwal, has dismissed the campaign as "gesture politics", claiming the Tories signed off on the controversial option when they were in joint control of the council in May.

The public consultation ends in December 22.
