A teenage boy was attacked during a festive event.

The 16-year-old, from Chelmsford, sustained serious facial injuries during the Christmas light switch-on celebrations in Ongar last Friday.

The boy’s girlfriend was also assaulted as she tried to protect him from the group of boys that carried out the attack.

Police have refused to comment on reports a baseball bat was used, but have not explained why.

The boy was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital for treatment after an ambulance was called at around 8.20pm.

Parts of High Street were cordoned off following the attack, which happened shortly after the Christmas lights were switched on.

No arrests have been made by the police.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Nicola Hudson, of Loughton CID, said: “This happened on the night of the Christmas lights event so the High Street was very busy.

“I would ask anyone who witnessed the incident to contact me.”

Councillor Brian Surtees of Epping Forest District Council said: “It was a great shame because it is not the sort of thing we want to happen in Ongar.

“For some people it marred the lights, but otherwise they were a great success.”

Any witnesses to the incident or anyone who has information about the assault should contact police on 101 or phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
