A construction boss has been jailed after a labourer he employed was crushed to death.

Labourer Anghel Milosavlevici, 37, of Walthamstow, died on December 2 2010, while working on a basement extension in a property in Fulham.

Commercial director Conrad Sidebottom, 46, of Siday Construction Ltd in Hertford, was sentenced to three years and three months imprisonment at Southwark Crown Court yesterday.

Health and safety consultant Richard Golding, 43, of High Street in Hadleigh, was given a nine month sentence.

After Mr Milosavlevici's death, the men were charged with failing to take reasonable care for the health and safety of an employee and were both convicted on Tuesday.

The court heard how Sidebottom and Golding knew that the building was on the verge of collapse, but neither took steps to ensure it was safe.

In a statement by Mr Milosavlevici's sister Cristina Milosavlevici, she described his death as a "tragic loss".

Ms Milosavlevici said: "He was the most gentle, kind-hearted and generous man you could ever hope to meet.

"He worked for Conrad Sidebottom for more than two years before he was killed, but we were shocked to hear evidence at the trial about how dangerous the site had become, and how little concern he showed for the safety of everyone involved in the excavation works.

"We hope today’s verdict makes other construction company directors take stock of their own working practices, and ensure that they are doing everything possible to keep their workers safe."
