A teenager has been sentenced to nearly seven years in a young offender institution after a handgun was found at his home.

Dominick Samuel Charles-Turner, 19, of Skeltons Lane in Leyton, was chased by police earlier this year after he refused to be questioned.

Officers became suspicious of his behaviour and wanted to check his bag on June 8.

Charles-Turner was arrested in Leyton Manor Park, where he discarded the bag before assaulting an officer.

A subsequent search of Turner's home uncovered a large quantity of cannabis, drug paraphernalia and a handgun.

Charles-Turner was charged assaulting a police officer and possessing a firearm and drugs with intent to supply.

He was then granted conditional bail until November 19.

The case was referred to Snaresbrook Crown Court, where Charles-Turner was jailed after a ten-day trial.

Detective constable Haroun Mason, of Trident Gang Command, said "This was an excellent result that came about because of the professionalism and thorough work by officers from Trident and Waltham Forest.

"The important thing is that another firearm has been taken off the streets and a drug dealer imprisoned. It sends a positive message to the community".

Charles-Turner was jailed for six years and eleven months.
