Epping Forest roads have been "earmarked for attention" after they were named the worst in the Essex, the county council has said.

The study, which involved vehicles adapted with lasers skimming road surfaces, revealed 4.4 per cent of the district’s roads needed repairing.

This is despite a claim there has been a 60 per cent improvement in the condition of roads since 2012/13.

District councillor Stephen Murray said Epping Forest was being neglected.

He added: "Getting Essex Highways to carry out any repair is almost impossible and certainly the most difficult job I have as an elected district councillor.

"In many ways we are the forgotten part of Essex County council."

The state of the district’s roads was brought to national attention recently when presenter and actor Bradley Walsh, who lives locally, described them as a “shocker” on BBC’s The One Show.

An Essex Highways spokesman said: "We are allocating significant resources to repairing roads throughout the county and certainly in Epping Forest, where priority routes have been earmarked for attention."
