Two brothers have denied intentionally selling illicit booze from their shop in Leytonstone.

Appearing at Thames Magistrates Court on Friday, the owners of SFW Express in Church Lane denied charges concerning the sale of counterfeit alcohol.

The council, which is bringing the prosecution, was involved in a sting operation at the shop in 2013.

Trading Standards officers claimed at the time they found 242 bottles of illicit wines on the premises, along with 154 bottles of vodka and 63kg of shisha tobacco.

Officers estimated that 10 per cent of the entire stock was counterfeit or had not had legitimate tax paid on it.

In June of this year SFW Express in Leytonstone had its licence to sell alcohol revoked by the council.

The shop is still trading whilst appealing the decision.

In court on Friday the brothers pleaded not guilty and opted for a trial by jury.

They will appear next at Snaresbrook Crown Court on December 19.
