A second man arrested in connection with a fatal crash on the M25 has been placed under the care of mental health professionals, Essex Police have said.

The 25-year-old is one or two men accused of causing death by dangerous driving after four lorries and a Peugeot car crashed through the central reservation between junctions 25 and 26 at around 1.50am on Tuesday.

A 39-year-old man, who is believed to be from Leicester, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The outside lanes remained closed in both directions for roadwork repairs throughout the whole of last week.

Essex Police bailed a 33-year-old man, also from Leicester, last week until April pending further enquiries.

Both men were initially treated at Harlow's Princess Alexandra Hospital before being questioned by police.

The 25-year-old was brought into custody on Friday and will now be re-questioned at a later date.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "A second man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been transferred into the care of mental health professionals following an assessment at Harlow Police Station.

"He will be interviewed at a later date pending the advice of doctors."

Chief Inspector Jonathan Baldwin, of Essex Police, described the collision as a "catastrophic scene of carnage".
